Semiconductors . . . Expect both Lattice and Alterasto leave guidance unchanged on this week’s mid-Quarter updates. Channel checks and pos. comments by Xilinx support outlook. Recent channel checks suggest the communications end mkt. has stabilized. This bodes well for both ALTR & LSCC, which derive >40% of revenue from this market.

ALTR’s update is on 3/11 with estimates at $181 million (+0.7% Quarter/Quarter). May comment on new product traction. LSCC’s update is on 3/13 with estimates at $58 million (+0.5% Quarter/Quarter). Has more risk because of lumpy nature of FPGA business. Overall expect PLD’s to outgrow other semi segments once end markets recover.

I think defense stocks have been weak because investors expect any war against Iraq will be won quickly. Is it any wonder when Briefing.com is printing bits like this:

15:23 ET Iraqi troops offer surrender; told to come back later
London's Mirror reports that terrified Iraqi soldiers have crossed the Kuwait border and tried to surrender to British forces - because they thought the war had already started. According to the report, the band of a dozen troops waved the white flag as British paratroopers tested their weapons during a routine exercise. The stunned paratroopers from 16 Air Assault Brigade were forced to tell the Iraqis they were not firing at them, and ordered them back to their home country telling them it was too early to surrender.
