And to the thread -

And if I may be so bold as to comment on the thread discussion in general - let me point out that there are really four types of "discussion".

1) A true discussion - which is neutral in bias and involves looking at the possibilities and ferreting out the factors that make one possibility more likely than the others. Strong on facts and logic but bland for it's lack of emotion.

2) A debate - where advocates take sides and then discuss the sides on a pro and con basis.

3) A political discussion - where the debate is framed more in terms of generalities and uses a fair amount of emotional appeal (arguably a more passionate form of debate). Limited on facts and logic but very lively and full of emotion.

4) Attacks - not really aimed at exploring an issue but is intended to silence the opposition by offending them or their beliefs. Colorful, emotional, but otherwise devoid of any meaningful substance. "Bush is a warmonger" is a prime example.

I submit that, by and large, this thread has done pretty well at staying in the realm of 1 and 2. But there have been a number of excursions into 3 and 4 - apparently enough to alienate two or three of the posters.

I would suggest that each poster take stock of their positions and try in the future to steer clear of 3 and especially 4. Unless the goal of this thread is to form a unanimous position through attrition?
