US Envoy: No UN Vote -2: Vote Seen Later In Week

10 Mar 16:33

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Negroponte said Monday
afternoon that there would be no vote Tuesday on a U.S.-backed resolution on
Iraq, which has run into strong opposition.

Before going into a closed meeting of the U.N. Security Council, Negroponte
said other backers of the amendment - the U.K. and Spain - would ask members to
be prepared to vote on the resolution later this week.

Last week the U.S. had indicated it would press for a vote as early as
Tuesday.

As it's now written, the resolution sets a deadline of Monday, March 17, for
Iraq to meet its disarmament obligations.

Both the U.S. and U.K. said earlier Monday that they were open to possible
changes in the resolution.

Negroponte told reporters in remarks broadcast live on television that the
U.S. remains convinced that Iraq isn't in compliance with the latest U.N.

resolution and if Baghdad fails to disarm peacefully it will have to be
disarmed by force.
