In 1990 Sa-dam started using chemical weapons on Kurdish tribes, for an experiment or whatever, it was in his arsenal so he used it. That pissed off the elder Bush, don't you think? Reagan OTOH was a cowboy/hollywood politician. What did he care (or know) about what was going to come?

< I always thought Saddam would have been one of the most loyal Yankee puppy. He got super buddy treatment from Reagan and elder Bush. Something went wrong and I cannot figure out what it was. >

(Dear Fred, I thought to really have some good thread bare discussion on your query.. )

Saddam-the most loyal Yankee puppy now the most hated..

He epitomizes uncertainties in the very critical Gulf region, he represents the rejectionist block within Middle East, Syria is after Assad a far junior member and Libya post Lockerbie a has been terrorist and may be a wannabees terrist but now a nice docile guy. ( Reagan bombing a his tent helped him straighten up)

Post Saddam Iraq will lead to betterment of pluralism in Middle East. Life under Saddam and Baath party in last 30 years for Iraqis have been a living hell for Iraqis. Now post 911 the pockets of uncertainties cannot be afforded, be it Iraq or Pakistan for that matter, if the government’s will not pledge to line up and open their doors to peeping intelligence agencies of US in relation to MWD’s and overall strategy of terror politics.

Middle east nations including South Asians have a undeclared policy of main ting a sate department of official terror apparatus, these things are now not condoned, Anthrax and thousand of tons of other toxic material in hands of Saddam post 911 are a great significant threat to global western civilisation, before Saddam was a voice of stability in an instable Peninsula and Iran, now Iran is considered as a lesser evil and Saudi Wahabism a greater one, Sunni Saddam can hypothetically join hands with Sunni Wahabis and provide them a sanctuary where plans can evolve within peninsula to destabilise global civilisation, what these nest of terror post Afghan war requires is a safe haven that needs to be denied, now the moral issue is that neither US nor Britain can say that so open so MWD violation is a great cover but little hypocritical and one that most liberals find it convenient to poke holes at, however the significance of threat cannot be underestimated. That is the only country, the other significant problem nation Pakistan is practically subdued they have chosen the right side post 911, thanks Mush it could have gone other way but even if Pakistani progressive policies are negated they will face a similar fate, the global policy of appeasement and encouragement of official terror has lost patience and support, Reagan and Sr. Bush era is finished in this new era pockets of uncertainties will not be allowed to exist, this was my comment even in my first article post 911..

The problem with these demonstrators is that they are drawing moral equivalence, for example the issue of ‘change of despots’ is not constitutionally allowed or tyrants are internal affairs of Iraq not US, the usual argument is that it was US that provided 28 strains of Anthrax and it was April Gillespie who told him that USA has no opinion on internal Arab disputes, since Saddam was nurtured by US so the deduction is that Saddam is an internal matter of Iraq and should be left to flourish and provide the stability that he provides by ruling a 30% Sunni minority over 70% Shiites. How come now US see all the evil whereas he was blue-eyed baby of the west, my preamble gives ample answer to these questions but definitely world has changed, what use to be acceptable nearly a decade back is no more acceptable, now post 911 the devastation levels originating from pockets of uncertainties can be mind boggling and hence no regions that remain no-go for US intelligence and forces should be allowed to continue.

Iraq is one such region and for good of Iraqi this change of thinking will bring long needed freedom and happiness, but it was not freedom of Iraqis I concede that brought the change of heart from Anglo- Saxons it was ground realities of global nest of terrorism post 911.

I talk to many of Iraqis in my travels I have yet to find one who is not happy on his forecasted removal. Of course freedom of Iraqis is not the driving force nor it is oil for US, it is safety of US interests and home security for western civilisation, I really feel sorry that how simple demonstrators make it and my sympathies for those who by demonstrating in millions think that they are serving the interests of Iraqi nation slaved by the chains of this tyrant.

When Baghdad will be freed all these demonstrations shall be forgotten, when jubilant Baghdadis will dance on the streets of Iraq and cities like Kirkuk will garland the freedom forces, their will be lot of egg on many faces in Europe, life in Kabul today is million times better than hellish life under Talebin, OK, Americans did it self interests but we are definite beneficiaries. In 2001 Oct these same liberals were forecasting hell for US in Kabul. It was never to be and same kind of action will be repeated in Baghdad. Quick, swift like lightening, some smiles on face of millions will mean a lot to me. Foolish figures of massive casualties are circulated and infant death reports are highlighted, honestly all this is Iraqi propaganda, nearly 500,000 able bodies man that includes his own two son in laws and one brother in law were mercilessly killed to keep him in power, no one has shed more Iraqi blood than this apparatus of thugs that rule good Iraqis. God has listened to their cries my be!!

The strategic implications for France, Russians would be immense, the schism between the Alliance has developed, the economic interests of EU and political influence within Peninsula and littoral states would definitely suffer, I have not an ounce of doubt that Saddam is a goner, although I do accept that MWD is a smoke screen to remove this apparatus of thugs but all this cannot be explained, may be it is to difficult stuff for common man. Hail the freedom for poor Iraqis they deserve to speak like I have and if someone is ready to help them give that freedom I am with that power whole heartedly I am not going to look for what happened and who did what, we all have our mistakes and share of killings as nations.
