Google has developed what they term an "efficient search algorithm". Oh, and they a few horses too - a Linux cluster of over 10,000 servers built out of basic, cheap PCs. Their algorithm goes beyond indexing, since they "rank" pages as well.

Google throws an amazing amount of computing horsepower at the problem. And I'm sure whatever indexing/searching methods they're using are far more efficient than anything available in SQL Server or Oracle.

I'm pretty sure SI is a Linux shop running an Oracle db.
