Some routers can act as firewalls.

People drive around office parks wtih antennas and laptops in their cars seeing which corporate networks they can tap into. Peope in your neighborhood may also be able to tap in.

Easiest fix is after you get network running, enable security. Many people don't.

Many corporations have sites running without the security enbaled. Really.

Being up on 5 Ghz reduces this, because 95% of the wireless LANs are still 802.11b 2.5 GHz, so that's where hackers look.

kb, you should also have a firewall program. I use Zone Alarm free. Any program that wants to access the internet from your PC must have your permission. ZA will alert you and you can give one-time or permanent permission. Also make sure you enable WEP encryption for wireless.

The Linksys router has an excellent firewall. Makes you essentially invisible to most nasty elements on the Net.

To test your set up, try grc.com and try their tests.
