They have been the closest of allies. But under the intense pressure of a diplomatic crisis at the United Nations and an imminent war in Iraq, the friendship between the United States and Britain is beginning to fray.

I suspect that the reason for not taking out Saddam in the Gulf War had more to do with our desire to see Iraq remain a bulwark of sorts against Iran as well as the lack of a plan as to what we should do after his demise.

Jacob,

Two replies to the same post!

We were "constrained" by our policy of Realism you got that one right.

As to your assertion - We could have done it with almost zero incremental cost we don't know that and the conventional wisdom of the day was that Iraq would quickly implode with a defeated Saddam humiliated.

The moral course with regards to despots and genocidal maniacs requires action. Sitting idle and watching a murder you could prevent is a sin - not as bad as the murder itself, but pretty damning.

I always go back to Kosovo and Rwanda on that one. Who blocked (vetoed) UNSC action in Kosovo - Russia. Who had to be dragged kicking and screaming into Kosovo - France. Who actually helped the killers in Rwanda - France. Who blocked UNSC action on Rwanda - to our shame - the USofA.
