That (hybrids) is certainly a viable alternative for some decades.

However, this one statement from your article "However, producing the fuel itself would involve substantial carbon dioxide emissions" is predicated on petrochemical feedstocks being the commercial source for hydrogen production... or the electricity for hydrolysis coming from fossil fuel power plants (not nuclear, solar, or other 'renewable' sources).

It also is predicated upon the new semiconductor-based direct solar hydrolysis process not being employed.
