Frankly, I don't understand how Turkey can claim to be a democracy with all the human rts. violations that go on within its borders.

While democracies tend to have better human rights records then non democracies, having a poor human rights record doesn't make you not a democracy. People can vote for an abusive government esp. if it is mainly abusing minorities that they don't like. The US was a democracy (or strictly speaking a democratic republic) back when we had slavery.
