I would lay down large money that this summary is not far from President Bush's view of the affair.

I think the Admin went into this figuring on treating everybody fairly, but the French are going to pay. I would not want to be a Frenchman owed money by the present Iraqi Government.

The French et al. smell blood, they are not going to back off now when they see the prospect of doing real damage.

Politicians in general and particularly in France have the memory of elephants and can be très rancunier. We all clearly remember Kenneth Starr's holy war against Klintoon - clearly more motivated by the tobacco cases he'd lost against Clinton's administration than any genuine sense of "morals". One reason important social problems rarely get solved in a reasonable time frame is that politicians responsible for doing the work spend most of their time on petty turf wars which are a lot more fun.

Chirac has on several occasions wanted to stick it to the USA over minor issues and failed, and this Iraq soap opera is a really golden opportunity for him and like minded individuals to get another chance. Instead of doing anything productive, bien entendu.

I don't know who the people in the media who loudly proclaim their self righteous indignation over the Iraq situation, or who are pulling meaningless publicity stunts like going to Iraq to act as "human shields" really think they're kidding. You never see anybody going to Algeria to act as human shields against the Islamist extremists who to this day are still slitting throats regularly, though it's a far cry from the heady days when a city like Algiers would suffer some 400 dead at one go. Were were the global peace marches when Rwanda went down ? That is impossible for me personally to conceive of, a body count of about 1/6 of that of the Shoah. But Jenin got more airtime recently than that.

Just petty politics as usual.
