We already have that responsibility. We can't avoid it:

Perhaps I’m excessively traditional here, but I can’t help thinking that some wee bit of the responsibility for resolving the Israeli/Palestinian dilemma lies with the Israelis and the Palestinians. In fact, as long as those two groups maintain their current approaches, nobody, including us, has a snowball’s chance in hell of effecting any sort of resolution. We have a degree of influence, probably more than anyone else, but that influence is not infinite and there are things we cannot do.

That reality makes everything we do in the Middle East more difficult, but that’s something we have to live with.
