The attack on Savage's MSNBC show, which I have followed only in the papers because I've never seen or otherwise heard of him, is interesting. It follows the attack on Dr. Laura Schleisinger (sp).

It is becoming increasingly clear that certain interest groups are determined to go to great lengths to limit what speech is allowed to appear on television. They reject the concept that the answer to what they view as wrong speech is to counter it with right speech and trust the public to recognize the difference. Their answer is that the solution to wrong speech is to drive it out of the public marketplace of ideas, so that only those ideas they approve of can get a public airing.

IMO they are doing enormous damage to the whole concept of an informed populance. They are setting themselves up for the same tactics being used against them and speakers they approve of. And since they are generally in the minority, they stand a very good chance of coming out on the short end of that battle before too long.

Not to mention that they tend to create martyrs, and creating martyrs of your enemies is never a good tactic.

One wonders why they are so shortsighted and so intellectually terrified of open discussion of ideas.
