Don't worry Steve, we would never lump you guys in with the French!

I really do hope and pray that Blair isn't forced to back down, because I worry that it could set off a wave of really ugly isolationism (or worse) in the States.

Here's my reasoning:

We are allies (to the extent that we are) with Germany because the longer we can keep troops there the longer it will be before the Germans fly off the handle and try to take over the world again.

We are allies with the French because of geographic necessity, i.e., they are between Germany & Britain.

But our alliance with Britain is more akin to a familial relationship. Sure, we had a couple of tiffs a couple centuries ago, but what family doesn't have its squabbles?

IMDO, if Britain were to back out on us there are a lot of people in this country who would take it as a sign that it really is us against the world. I think that is a very dangerous emotion to have growing in the world's only super-power -- not just vis-a-vis Iraq, but in general. ):
