That's not how I read it.

What he was intending to say, as I read it, was that the strong support of the Jewish lobby -- and please don't pretend there isn't one, there certainly is, as there is a Catholic lobby, a Baptist lobby, a drug store lobby, etc., etc., etc. -- was influential in moving us toward war. There's nothing wrong in that. But there's also nothing wrong in pointing it out.

Are you really suggesting that if Israel and the Jewish community in the US both strongly opposed this war, and were outspoken about their opposition, Bush would be going ahead as strongly as he is without feeling the need for international support?

Well, that was not my impression. But I never voted for him and I don't know him well enough to offer an educated guess on what he meant. I can only offer reasonable alternative interpretations. We all know that it's not unusual for folks who identify with certain groups, like Jews or the obese or atheists or whatever, to hear only the worst.
