You know Jim, explanations as to what is happening and why are many and varied, and it is hard to pin down the facts. The arguments seem reasonable at times, only to be clouded over by events or some other opposing point of view.

Take for example the oft repeated argument that the up-coming "war" is inhibiting the markets. Seems reasonable on the surface. The market therefore cannot or will not anticipate a successful outcome.

However, as far as gold and oil is concerned, the market has already anticipated a successful outcome, therefore the sell-off in stocks. Also seems a reasonable argument.

So how come the market is anticipating one direction for gold and oil, but unable to anticipate the same direction for markets in general?
