OT Sun, after several decades of watching markets, I believe that conclusion is 100% accurate. If you do nothing but keep it in mind, it will help you immeasurably and it applies to all aspects of "markets," not just earnings. Think of the call of Dow 25,000 to name just one.

This also applies to money managers that only have a small amount of assets. The only way to grow assets is to standout in an attempt to add a lot of alpha. After a manager acquires a significant amount of assets he/she/they will focus first on risk control and secondly on return. At that point it is all about staying close to the benchmark and not losing assets (ie they are putting the business first and the client's return second).
