In this case, we should all be able to relate to the desires of those who feel
oppressed to rebel and lash out against whatever bogeyman they see.

My first response to that was no way. No matter what bogeyman McVeigh saw, I can't relate to his blowing up a day care center. The man who kidnapped the Smart girl certainly saw bogeymen, but I can't relate to his decision to put that family through so much pain,

Then I re-read your message and realized you were limiting yourself to the desires of those who feel oppressed, not relating to the way they do it. I'm not sure, though, that that's a useful distinction. I don't know a single person who hasn't at some point in their life wanted to rebel and lash out against somebody or something. What society expects is that you control that, or channel it into societally acceptable ways. I don't relate, and don't want to relate, to those who want to lash out by blowing up people who have done them no harm whatsoever.
