Que, Nice to see you've been converted to an E&P fan <g>!

If I recall correctly you have only mentioned 2 E&P companies, DNR & CRK I believe. If those constitute your entire E&P portfolio you may wanna consider diversifying a bit more. The E&P business is a risky one and shit can happen even to the best-run company.

>but evidently there is enough confidence even today to provide healthy valuations for most of the market.

That's the problem. I'd expect the market to be really cheap when it bottoms. Maybe the S+P has farther to go?

. But I see it as the only game in town to earn a decent gain on my assets.

In the 90s all sorts of books came out saying that stocks always go up. Over the very long term that is true, but what they all glossed over is that in the 70s stocks went nowhere for 10 years. (more like 20 when you adjust for inflation.) After the kind of boom-bust cycle we went through the overall market is likely to go through a long period of consolidation. I'm not saying you won't make money in OSX (especially if you're a good trader) but you have to factor in a headwind from the crappy condition of the rest of the market.

how will they feel about investing in profitable companies that are easy to understand that provide energy?

A few years ago, Enron was a profitable energy company. I think that Enron, El Paso, Reliant etc have left the energy sector with a big image problem.

How much NG can be found in the vast areas that are presently off limits to drilling?

None, because they will stay off limits. ANWR is a hellish place, and Bush can't even get that open.
