Later than some anticipated but earlier than some FUDsters predicted:

Sorry Eric....but I think the jury is still out on this one.

His comment actually was that volume deliviries wouldnt be seen until '04/'05. He later clarified (numerous times during presentations) that he meant 10 million handsets in a single year when he said volumes.

If all he meant was a 100,000 handsets, FOMA would have hit that during late '01, early '02.

I dont think that anybody sees 10 million W-CDMA handsets this year....he is either going to be right or to optimistic.

Think we'll see any EDGE handsets at CTIA? I see that the 6220 will be available 3Q '03.

Nokia seems to have some trouble with its PR folks. I recall some difficulties in Germany last year as respects EDGE handsets. The recent pre-CTIA PR from New Orleans was a bit strange, and the subsequent PR even more so.

Wonder what's going on?

Jacobs was talking about "volume." You don't really think 70,000 handsets qualify as volume, do you?

We'll have to wait and see if the two million promised by the end of the year actually are delivered.

Eric, " Jacobs predicts that W-CDMA infrastructure and handsets will not be available in volume until 2005 – three years later than expected."

and now seven months after your post we can detect some volume:
(btw thanks to chapq on the "moderated")

"Goldman Sachs last month estimated Hutchison's 3G subscribers at about
210,000 in Britain and 330,000 in Italy and kept its year-end estimates at
650,000 and 800,000 respectively, saying that there was a downside risk due to
uncertain handset supply from NEC.

NEC said it aimed to deliver between two million and 2.5 million handsets to
Hutchison 3G by the end of this year out of a total of six million orders."

IJ must be pleased that he was wrong!
