Yes, his mouth is what turned me off. This was way back when he was mayor of Alexandria or some such. I can barely remember. I don't know what it was he said then that provoked me, but something did.

Nonetheless, it seems to me that his explanation that his statement was a call for greater anti-war Jewish engagement thinking that it could make the difference is a plausible explanation given the context. Not necessarily correct, but plausible.

And his daughter's conversion to Judaism makes it hard to imagine the guy's seriously anti-semitic.

You may be predisposed to see anti-semitism behind every bush. I'm predisposed to see good intentions and stupidity behind every bush. We expect what life has taught us to expect. As shortcomings go, I guess we could each do worse.
