Please don't think that I don't hold the leaders blameless for the obvious consequences of their actions. And the cafeteria incident is, I believe, reckless behavior - they should know better! I would love to see them (we the people)) sued if someone is hurt as a result.

But in the immigration issue - no public official went out and started disparaging immigrants. And the anti- Arab/Muslim/"one of those" attitude hit the streets before the Patriot act was even written. The first murder ( of a Sihk "one of those") was (36 hours)? after 9-11.

As for Bush - I was absolutely livid after his 9-11 speech for many reasons. But the one that angered me the most was his stupidity at not speaking out immediately against the inevitable acts of violence. To his credit he did finally speak out on that Friday and ordered a special FBI task force to investigate this category of hate crimes. Better late then never.
