"But that has NOTHING to do with a CIVILIZED DEFINITION of Legitimacy" There is NO SUCH THING. "legitimacy" is in the MIND of the beholder. Consequently, you can look at a certain set of circumstances and others can look at the SAME SET of circumstances and see "legitimacy" in ENTIRELY different ways. Two different courts can (and do) view the same set of laws differently. It is an intellectual pretense that legitimacy exists at all. It is just a device to justify the "tv show" that goes on in your (and everybody else's mind). If you haven't discovered this at this late date, there is still time. But you never know when you die.
