We tend to forget that he was answering a specific question from a Jewish woman. I always cut politicians some slack when they are working without a script, answering questions that may take them by surprise. I tap dance pretty well in areas where I am expert and/or prepared. But come at me from left field, I don't guarantee a remark that would pass the kind of scrutiny that Moran's is getting. I always feel for those who get caught that way. It's fine to parse prepared statements, but Q&A scenarios warrant some latitude.
