That implies that our interests are a zero sum game, and it also implies that one can know with certainty before it happens what course will be in our best interests. I don't believe either is true. Not to mention that people may disagree on just which of our interests are our "best" interests at any given time. I think people can have an honest disagreement about what we should do and still all be committed to our best interests. I certainly don't think that all the people I know who question the wisdom of going to war against Saddam in the short term future are against our best interests. Not at all.
