It is interesting that you point that out, although there were individuating causes in each case. After the Franco- Prussian War, the French built the church of La Sacre' Cour (the sacred heart) as a penance for losing. It was completed in 1914, just in time for the Premiere Guerre moniale. High strung........

Some army guys who refused to fight were executed. Quite many soldiers were fraternizing with German soldiers by cover of night, across the trenches. Opium cigarettes were routinely given to soldiers of both sides by their commanders.
And some units (French at least) had seventeen hundred % turnover. Translated differently, doing one's time of service in a B17 during WWII was 17 times less dangerous...
