The Arguments: III - It will cost too many Innocent lives.

War is terrible. Although I believe the US will take reasonable steps to protect innocent lives, it is more likely than not, that some civilians will be killed.

However, if civilian loss of life is the measurement, then this MUST be balanced against how many civilian lives (US and Iraqi) will be lost if Saddam stays in power.

The lives taken by Saddam are well documented and continue to this day. In one town in Kurdistan alone, there were 10,000 killed. He continues to this day. A newscaster made a joke about his wife. The newscaster was tortured, hanged and her tongue was cut out when the corpse was returned to the family. In early February, an Iraqi missile engineer was executed to prevent him passing vital information to United Nations weapons inspectors. The list goes on and on.

Innocent lives are lost everyday in Iraq. Standing by allows it to continue. Not that I am saying this is why we should get rid of Saddam, (although this should be sufficient reason), only that if the left's concern is for innocent life, then in order to be honest, they should be in favor of invading Iraq, since it is plainly evident that Saddam has and continues to murder civilians.

The Arguments: II – It will create more terrorism – Part 2:

The Clinton Lesson

Khalid S. Mohammed had been linked to the failed plot to blow up US Airliners over the Pacific Ocean. The FBI and the CIA had begun a manhunt to find him. In 1995, the FBI and the CIA tracked Mohammed to Qatar. The FBI developed a plan to snatch him from his safe house in Qatar. The plan died in the administration – killed for fear of an anti-US backlash. (1)

Now, the purpose here is not to be a criticize Clinton. But should we not note the lessons from history? That the failure to act, for fear of reprisal from others is flawed reasoning? That the consequences of failure to act can be catastrophic? In this highly salient case, this failure to act resulted in the worst ever attack on American soil.

Funny how words change meaning in Orwells world.

Terrorism pre 911 = attack on civilians.

Terrorism post 911 = attack on anything.

The USS Cole was a military target.

Will the Muslim world be incited to attack us? This assumes widespread support for Saddam. Huh? Nobody in the region, with the exception of some terrorists, likes him. This is evidenced by most of his neighbors supporting the US position. The nations, who do not, are largely silent. This is because secretly they want Saddam gone. Even the original terrorist himself (Arafat) has rebuffed Saddam. The terrorists, (some of whom he is currently harboring) will try to attack us regardless of what we do in the coming months.

So here you are supporting the view that the terrorists, specifically the Al Qaeda, don't like Saddam. And obviously Saddam doesn't like them.

Ironic you would support the views of those you argue against.

The argument that there will be more terror, IMHO, is real because America and G. Britain have treated the Middle East as colonies for decades. By going to war now we are just reinforcing the arguments of Anti-US extremists.
