<Most military leaders to be sure are getting ready to fight but not with the raucous display often seen in other nations>

Yes, and this is a very encouraging sign. If this war (and I don't mean just Iraq, but the whole global war) goes badly, if it turns out we aren't welcomed everywhere as liberators, if Nation-Building turns out to be as hard as Bush thought it was (pre- 9/11 Bush)if the casualties turn out to be an order of magnitude or two larger than expected,
then we are going to see an amazingly abrupt about-face in policy. Much faster than happened in Vietnam. Mainly because so many current decision-makers experienced Vietnam, during their "formative years".

I agree.....you make some good points.

You worry too much. We are not out build nations. If casualties mount then "you aint seen nothing yet" as to what our military will do. Like delete 105 Palaces if we were trying to save them and welcome to 20 more Buffs with precision guided bombs.
That is to say we are going in with precision, restraint, and consideration for non-combatants.
But if they do not surrender their troops will experience the Moab and few more adventures beyond that.
The job will be completed if it starts, there may be policy changes afterwards if some new direction is indicated by the results. And in fact, policy changes will be occurring often to accommodate other adjustments to relationships in the new Century
As far as being regarded as the 'good'guys in other nations eyes, it is more like "let no good deed go unpunished", a French phase meaning S-----you
