NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. military officials say Iraq has recently moved artillery capable of firing chemical or biological warheads to several locations just north of the Kuwait border, NBC News reported Thursday night.

The officials say the artillery poses a direct threat to U.S. troops now in Kuwait, preparing for a possible war with Iraq, the report said.

NBC News also reported that the Iraqis are positioning surface-to-surface missiles in far western Iraq. Officials fear this could mean Iraqi President Saddam Hussein intends to use chemical or biological weapons against Israel.

The network said U.S. warplanes may attack the new artillery and missile sites "before the Iraqis have a chance to use them."
