Here's a list in no particular order to illustrate my thoughts-

Lisa, Mac- I consider apple in its current form to have "come from Xerox Parc".

Oracle- IBM Santa Theresa Lab.

Siebel- Oracle.

BEA- Sun. (this one is complicated but you get the idea)

Peoplesoft- Dun and Bradstreet.

Palm- Apple.

Lam - Applied Materials (LAM= Leaving Applied Materials)

A lot of stuff comes from academia, I'll grant you that, but my belief is there are actually more companies that come from other companies, or take ideas that were initiated at other companies and productize them.
