Taiwan's Mediatek denies infringing on ESS patent

Thursday March 13, 5:38 am ET

TAIPEI, March 13 (Reuters) - Taiwan's Mediatek Inc (Taiwan:2454.TW - News), the world's largest DVD chipset designer, denied on Thursday any wrongdoing in a dispute with rival ESS Technology Inc. (NasdaqNM:ESST - News) over a patent infringement.

ESS said on Wednesday it had filed a preliminary injunction in the U.S. district court of California against Mediatek for copyright infringement of it's DVD firmware and user interface.

Mediatek said in a statement, "There is no infringement claim against Mediatek's DVD player chipsets in this case. Nor does the case involve the core technology of the firmware used with such DVD players chipsets."

Firmware and user interface are programming instructions that allow chipsets to communicate with the devices they control.

However, Mediatek, which makes chipsets used to control optical storage in DVD players or CD burners, said it had modified the user interface for customers in a bid to ease the impact of the controversy on clients.

On Thursday, shares of Mediatek lost T$6 or 2.2 percent to end at T$267, underperforming a 1.17 percent rise in the main TAIEX (Taiwan:^TWII - News) index. (US$=T$34.70)
