Nokia formally released the EDGE capable tri-band Nokia 6200 that they had already privately shown and demonstrated to carrier users and prospects at NMIC in Munich a few weeks earlier, at COMDEX, in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 18, 2002.

First sighting of the formal Nokia 6200 launch goes to the ever vigilant Slacker:

Message 18246985;

Thanks, Eric. Very kind of you.

The reason I asked is because Nokia originally said the 6200 was a 3G EDGE phone. Nokia now says the 6200 is a 2.5G EGPRS phone.

Nokia 6200 offers a great development environment with its support for Java™ MIDP 1.0, WAP 1.2.1 & XHTML Mobile Profile, and MMS. Applications accessed on the device benefit from EGPRS, a 2.5G technology that provides always-on, high speed data access over GSM cellular networks.

This confusion naturally prompted my question--when was an EDGE phone first announced? I suppose if the 6220 is in fact a true 3G EDGE phone instead of a 2.5G EGPRS phone like the 6200, the recent announcement will be the first time an EDGE phone is announced. Nokia says it will be available in Q3:

Thanks.
