Verizon Wireless to Offer High-Speed Wireless Broadband Services for Business Customers

Monday March 17, 8:04 am ET

To Introduce 1xEV-DO Service in Washington, D.C. and San Diego and Wi-Fi Service Nationwide

New Services Provide Increased Speed, Utility and Mobility for Mobile Pros, Home Office, Small/Medium and Enterprise Customers

NEW ORLEANS, WASHINGTON and SAN DIEGO, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- CTIA Wireless 2003: Addressing business customers' need for speed, security and mobility Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless provider, announced plans to offer high-speed wireless data service for the mobile workforce that's comparable with wireline broadband connections. The company plans to market 1xEV-DO technology, offering wireless data speeds up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) following successful technology trials. Verizon Wireless will also offer Wi-Fi (802.11b) service, providing connections between the Verizon Wireless wide area network (WAN) and hundreds of 'hot spots' across the country.

Beginning in the third quarter 2003, Verizon Wireless' data customers in Washington and San Diego will be the first to take advantage of the new 1xEV-DO service and applications. With virtual private network (VPN) connections, data customers in both cities will be able to access the 1xEV-DO high-speed data network as an extension of their corporate local area network (LAN) or intranet, allowing them to work from any location as if they were in the office.

With secure peak data transmission speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps), Verizon Wireless' 1xEV-DO service will be faster than GPRS and EDGE speeds. By comparison it would take GPRS service almost seven minutes and EDGE service one and a half minutes to download an email attachment (1 Meg file), with 1xEV-DO the file will be downloaded in just under 20 seconds. 1xEV-DO service will be ideal for remote access to corporate intranets and databases, corporate email with attachments, large file transfers and multimedia services like video and audio streaming.

In order to receive the increased data speeds, 1xEV-DO devices are required. Verizon Wireless plans to sell a wide array of 1xEV-DO devices including PCMCIA cards, modem solutions for the office and a wide range of the latest mobile devices.

Verizon Wireless To Offer Wi-Fi Service Beginning Q3

Also in the third quarter, Verizon Wireless, plans to offer complementary access between its own branded 802.11 service and its WAN. Recognizing the proliferation of Wi-Fi on corporate campuses and in travel related venues such as hotels and airports, Verizon Wireless is working with Wayport, Inc. to offer Wi-Fi service in popular indoor locations. Verizon Wireless will provide 24/7 network monitoring for the new service, plus authentication and billing. The new service will be available through Verizon Wireless' existing distribution channels including B2B sales teams.

"Our business customers have a need for speed, security, coverage and reliability when it comes to wireless access to data," said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer. "We're going to meet their diverse needs by delivering customized, technologically advanced wireless solutions."

1xEV-DO: Technology Tested and Ready for Market

In 2002 Verizon Wireless conducted technology trials of 1xEV-DO in Washington with Lucent Technologies and in San Diego with Nortel Networks. Verizon Wireless will expand the technology in these two markets, powered by Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks equipment, beyond the initial trial areas.

"We've had tremendous success with our 1XRTT Express Network launch and have closely monitored market demand for even higher speed wireless data services while evaluating advantages of technology and network improvements," said Dick Lynch, executive vice president and chief technical officer for Verizon Wireless. "The two market launches of 1xEV-DO and our plans to offer Wi-Fi service reaffirms our commitment to delivering the best technology, coverage and capabilities to our business customers."

Today's announcement is part of the company's leadership in serving business customers, from mobile professionals, to small and medium businesses, to large enterprises. With its premier nationwide network as a foundation, the company's solutions for these segments range from off-the-shelf voice tools, remote access and PIM applications, to custom vertical applications.

VZ will quickly tie into NextWave's network as it evolves.

PCS will rapidly follow as well. dv prospects are toast - it will never go commercial.

Seybold appears wrong - carriers will actually be among the first movers to do - along with MSFT, MSN, Earthlink...

Thailand's First EDGE Trial Puts DTAC In the First Wave of Operators Globally Moving Towards Advanced Mobile Services Thursday April 3, 4:08 am ET

Nokia's EDGE Solutions Selected for High Quality Network Services

HELSINKI, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 2003--Total Access Communication (DTAC) and Nokia announced the successful completion of the first EDGE call in Thailand and among the first operator calls worldwide.

The EDGE call in a laboratory environment is part of the first phase DTAC EDGE trial using commercial equipment from Nokia.

With EDGE technology, mobile phone operators can offer customers higher quality network services that combine high-speed data, voice, audio, video and text.

"With its industry leading solution Nokia was the clear choice for EDGE. DTAC welcomes this trial as it will make us ready to be the first operator in Thailand to roll out EDGE when the market is ready," says Sigve Brekke, DTAC's Co-Chief Executive Officer.

"There was a clear shift in interest towards EDGE in 2002. Many operators worldwide have started to roll out GSM/EDGE hardware. We at Nokia are delighted that DTAC has demonstrated strong commitment to the global standard of GSM and its trust in Nokia. We are excited to trial our EDGE technology with DTAC," adds Kristian Strand, Account Director, Nokia Networks.

To date, Nokia has supplied DTAC with complete GSM systems and solutions comprising of Nokia Base Station Subsystems, Nokia Switching Subsystem and GPRS Core Network, Nokia Multimedia Messaging Center (MMSC), Short Message Service Centre (SMSC), Nokia Intelligent Network (IN) Platform and Network Consultancy Services.

Nokia has delivered GSM/EDGE hardware since December 2001. By now Nokia has delivered EDGE capable GSM hardware in volumes to 28 operators in 19 countries. This spring Nokia will have fourteen EDGE trials in all continents. Many other Nokia customers are expected to join to the global EDGE success. Earlier this year Nokia also announced EDGE deals with America Movil in Colombia and in Equador.

Nokia announced last year the world's first triple-band 800/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE terminal, the Nokia 6200. The most recently announced EDGE terminal is the world's first Eurasian triband 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE terminal, the Nokia 6220. Nokia will add EDGE feature progressively throughout most terminal categories and EDGE will be available in all new Nokia GSM/GPRS terminals by end of 2004.

The prompt availability of EDGE phones in several price and performance categories leverages the power of the GSM standard in both economies of scale and in peak data speeds for 3G services.

DTAC is Thailand's leading wireless communications brand, with over 5.5 million customers. DTAC aims to make mobile communications easy, accessible and affordable, under a just and transparent pricing system. Telenor has been DTAC's strategic partner since 2000.
