re: democracy in SW Asia and Africa:

<Says it all, doesn't it?>

I Believe (is this my religion?) in the meme of Democracy, but I have to agree with you, this Idea has not taken root, across a wide swath of the world, including virtually all Africa, and almost every Muslim country. All of Israel's neighborhood.

But I have Faith. And my Faith isn't entirely based on the "triumph of hope over experience." I can find a lot of examples, where Democracy seems to be taking root on poor soil, soil where nothing good ever grew before. Poland. Romania. Taiwan. S. Korea. Brazil. South Africa.

The despairing quote you re-posted, could have been made by democrats from any of those countries, not so long ago. If you abandon the hope, the Faith, that everyone can be Saved by Lady Liberty, then you end up as a nihilist or Darwinian.
