Very interesting. I do feel that the French have not dealt with their past adequately, and wonder what effect that has.....

With 20% muslim population living in France, I think
its a major new dynamic. I believe, deep down, the French
don't like their N. African population. I wouldnt surprise me to see a radical right spring up (... LePen)
and turn France upside down. They are a fragile society
with potential major economic problems.

In my opinion, they deserve every consequence (economic, social, political) that they reap from their
own actions.

Well put, Jacob. That describes the citizenry to a large degree, as does the notion that they just don't like the experience of a greater power waging war with a lesser power because they've felt it firsthand.

Were there a way to accomplish regime change without the enormous risks to the population of Baghdad, I think the French opposition would soften a lot.

Personally, I just wish some sign of resistance from the Baathists would emerge. That the Southern Iraqis and Northern Kurds will work for regime change is apparent. But central Iraq is the big question mark. Without some sign of courage, one wonders if they support Hussein. And signs of resistance might convince antiwar folks elsewhere.
