I read a book a while ago called Virtual War. The premise of the book was that without good reporting, the ability of a democracy to check it's hawks would be impaired. It pretty much went over the sort of thing that is happening today with these warnings to press not to be in certain places. Where there is a news blackout no information can be checked, and the government will lie with impunity. Of course it will lie in our "best interests" and with out national security at heart, but the problem is- our best interests, and our national security, should be in part determined by us- without accurate information, that is impossible for us to do.

It's a great book- I recommend you read it.
