You know CB, we have reached a time in which a majority of the world is nauseated by the prospect of war and its effects, but have their collective heads up their butts re: the torture, the repression and the wmds that the targets of war employ on their own peoples and neighbors.
But i understand it, because, we, the US, almost alone is the purveyor of war--we are doing it. Pacifism seems to have won in europe and it gains ground here each day. This is not necessarily a good thing. We better get it right here in WW3 because if there is a WW4 we will have to surrender to the saddams before the war even starts. Of course a couple more 9/11s might change all that except for the fact that the US will be blamed for stoking the fires. mike

What are you talking about? Going back up the chain, Paul seems to be in a snit over something Steven Rogers wrote, but the Rogers post in the chain didn't seem particularly offensive, certainly nothing about baby killers. He did say something elsewhere about Israel maybe having something to do with the Israel / Palestinian situation, which is of course against local dogma but otherwise , you know, not that illogical, in terms of the way things usually work.

Are there no limits to the rhetoric being used against people who believe that war is necessary?

CB, it might be best to keep the context here. Steven posted his concern that some of the posts on the thread took the prospects of war too lightly. I don't recall at any point in that post he said he was commenting, exclusively, about posters who support the invasion. He could, in theory, have also been talking about some who are opposed but take the prospects of war lightly. We've all seen signs at demonstrations that do so.

Nor did I see anything in his post which said he was talking about everyone who posted one way or the other.

One of the best pieces of advice some of my posting friends have given me is when a particular post irks me, I should simply leave it alone. Pass on by on the other side of the street. As you know, I don't take that advice as often as I should.

>>I'm with you on this one, Paul. Between the allegations that people who support war against Iraq are baby killers,

I haven't seen any of that since I cracked down. Have you?

>> and that we exult in the idea of war

I saw a general statement that this is something to avoid, which is true.

>>and such, I am again questioning whether it's worthwhile even making the effort.

no effort, not happening.

>>I expect that if I were to call people who oppose war against Iraq baby killers because they oppose taking action to stop Saddam, or if I were to say that they exult in torture for the same reason, FL would say this was out of bounds.

You would be correct.

>>What say, Ken? Can I say that Stephen and JohnM etc. are baby killers and exult in torture because they don't support military action to stop Saddam?

Of course not. Why do you ask such a silly thing? You already know the answer.

>>Are there no limits to the rhetoric being used against people who believe that war is necessary?

Sounds like you haven't been paying attention. Do you have any more specific questions I can answer?

Regards,
