It is a very recent and capitalist concept that "need" and "desire" are the same thing. When I took marketing it was described as the art and science of creating "need". The extremely advanced and sophisticated marketing machinery of western world in general and US in particular has convinced many that somehow are needs are unlimited. They are not. Unless of course we have supremely paid Harvard graduates to continue to create "need" for us.

I believe that triumph of Capitalism over Communism was inevitable because Capitalism is closer to nature than Communism. In fact Communist regimes would not last very long even if there was no external pressures (from US) to begin with. That both China and USSR incorporated capitalistic measures in their own internal policies on their own is proof that the West was not as important in this as we'd like to think. That the one who incorporated capitalism in greater degree is still around and the other one is gone, is proof that Communism could not have survived anyway, it was too unnatural. It was perverted.

But have you ever thought about all the freedoms that you are denied under modern capitalism and the perversions that it rips of? The Orwillian propaganda uses Capitalism and Freedom interchangeably. It uses Democracy and Capitalism as one and the same. But is that really so? Words have been obscured in such an extent here that now "need" and "desire" mean the same thing too.
