That is the gist of the current problems with the UN. Every country wants to protect its sovereignty and for the Un to function they must subsume some of it. Sort of like states rights all over again. The reason we should stay in it is because sometimes nations do find general consensus about things and it can act effectively. Other times like now when the most powerful member disagrees with most of the rest we get our way anyway. We can't complain about the Un unless we are as willing to give up some of our national sovereignty as we would want others to.
