He was a schoolteacher when Saddam was sent to live with him in Baghdad at the age of 10. He became involved with the Baath Party early on and it was Khairullah who is believed to have instigated Saddam Hussein's first murder, when he was 20, of a prominent communist in his home town of Tikrit. Saddam later made Khairallah mayor of Baghdad, a position he abused to line his pockets to such an outrageous extent that Saddam eventually removed him. Khairallah Tulfah wrote a book which was published and distributed by the government press: "Three whom God should not have created: Persians, Jews and flies." Adnan Khairallah Adnan Khairallah was Saddam's cousin, and, as the son of Khairallah Tulfah, was virtually brought up with Saddam. He occupied a favoured position in Saddam's circles and became Defence Minister during Iraq's war with Iran. But Saddam came to suspect him because he achieved some degree of popularity and a power base in the army. Gradually, he was eased out of important areas like military intelligence and military buying. In April 1989, he died in a 'helicopter accident' while flying to northern Iraq from Baghdad. Barzan al-Tikriti Barzan is Saddam's half brother, the result of his mother's second marriage to Ibrahim Hassan. He has been a hanger-on of Saddam's since Saddam rose to power in the late 1960s. Barzan is rumoured to have fallen into disfavour with Saddam somewhat in recent years and now lives in Switzerland. But he is also credited with arranging Iraq's purchasing programme to build weapons of mass destruction of various kinds
