"believe Chirac has reasonable arguments"

Steeny, the reasons you give may well be a good excuse for Chirac to abstain in the UNSC, and refuse to assist the US. But they are very far from being an excuse to try to build other opposition to the US. The French are playing a far more ominous game, and should pay the price.

I find the French bashing incredibly cynical & overdone.

Oh, it's just normal for a breakup, steeny. This isn't about Chirac, although a different leader might have made some short term difference. This is the world wide breakup of our old cold war coalition, and it was due about now anyway. 911 just brought it to the fore. Look upon the "noise" right now as the divorce proceedings. we will settle into a new relationship as the years go by.

Hi Steeny; Re: "I can't figure out why Bush went to the UN at all if he had already decided to go to war no matter what."

I have no doubt that there are allies that will not go into Iraq with us without another UN resolution explicitly authorizing force. Turkey is probably the biggest one, but other important allies have made noises along that line as well.

Incidentally, there is a betting line on whether or not there will be such a resolution by March 31st or June 30th. Right now, the odds are trading heavily against, with around 3% by March 31st and 10% by June 30th:

They also have bets running for the level of the US homeland security level (i.e. red, orange, yellow, blue or green).
