Being "over there on the DSIW" thread is sorta like putting ones finger in retaining wall...with a crack in it... Amazing what some folks use for thinking, isn't it?

Hawk,
This article brought back memories or pre-saddam iraqi politics when the monarchy was overturned. There were numerous coups as i remember until that Baathists took over. As repressed as these folks are, they are certainly in no worse position to rebel than Eastern Europeans and the current situation in iraq reminds me a bit of Italy on the verge of liquidating mussolini. The Stalinist mantle may be the mask saddam wears but this is not russia under stalin or germany under hitler. And the folks in iraq, like the afghans, are probably thinking more of their own safety and political freedom than of the palestinians, kurds, kuwaitis or the value of wmds. mike
