German foreign ministry calls on citizens to immediately leave Iraq
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

FRANKFURT, Germany - The German foreign ministry said Sunday it was calling on all Germans to leave Iraq "immediately" and would close its embassy in Baghdad following the departures.

"German citizens in Iraq are advised to leave the country immediately," the Foreign Ministry warned in a travel advisory.

Once all the Germans had safely left Iraq, the German embassy in Baghdad would be closed down, a spokeswoman for the ministry said on customary condition of anonymity.

On Friday the ministry had warned Germans against trips to Iraq, stepping up an earlier advisory from two weeks ago that did not mention urgency.

Germany has had less serious travel advisories out for Iraq for several months, the spokeswoman said.
