I grew up skiing in Lake Tahoe. It was my sport. Then, three years ago on a SI trip, I blew out my knee when I took a huge jump. This was my first time on the snow since that accident. I didn't wear a brace this time, which was a mistake. But no harm. Next time I will wear an athletic brace (one of the jobs with hinges and everything). I have no desire to feel that kind of pain again.

I have to say, it is a lot of fun. since you are a skier, you will have an advantage over other newbies since you understand "edges". The sport that I have never heard it compared to, but that it reminded me a lot of is Water skiing.
