All except one factor.. The Economy.. This economy was ready to get slammed whether it had been Bush or Gore.. Politicians just don't have that much control... certainly not as much as the Fed.. If anything, what we saw was a terrific investment opportunity fed by the peace dividend (DOD spending cut by 40%), the end of the cold war and opening of China, as most importantly, the baby boomers of Japan, and America (and to a lesser extent, Europe) socking money away like never before, mainly into equities... Then we had the "gold rush" called the internet and astronomically good productivity gains here in the US economy (which are STILL quite good as people work twice as hard to cling onto their jobs). We had the collapse of the Asian Tigers, and the subsequent capital flight to the US, the last, and largest, functioning economy left. And ever since Asia has been engrossed in a currency trade war, attempting to depreciate their currencies against one another in order to gain the edge on exports to the US, foolishly thinking they can export their way out of recession (and in Japan's case, their liquidity trap of zero interest rates). So yes.. the US economy is ailing right now.. just like a heroin addict who has run out of suppliers for his habit, cheap consumer goods... But if you somehow think the rest of the world is in better shape than the US, you're sorely mistaken. When the US catches cold, the rest of the world catches pneumonia. And the EU will not be able to replace or rival the US economy without drastic restructuring and fixing the ticking timebomb they call their pension system. So believe me.. Bush isn't the only one trying to "distract" the public's eye from the economy. And I believe he recognizes that the rest of the world will not truly be able to grow economically until we have resolved both Iraq, and the Palestinian issue. Hawk
