Davis is in a no-win position now. Cut services or raise taxes or both. All unpopular stuff. But the law is he has to balance the budget. Other governors are facing the same type painful decisions. Bush however is under no constraints and is recklessly slashing taxes AND sharply raising spending. DURING a time the federal government has even worse deficits than California, much worse in fact. Why the dollar has plummted this year and the markets continue sinking. Which makes more common sense to you?

And yes Davis was a brilliant tactician to get rid of Riordan and hoodwink the GOP into nominating Simon. Simon was the worst candidate I have ever seen run for high office. A real stiff. Davis is also a boring guy. Zero charisma. But he must know how to do some things right. Maybe it's his combat experience. He knows how to fight.
