Give folks a chance to advance and their kids and grandkids somehow become smarter > Don't forget the Flynn Effect either [IQs increasing around the world in leaps and bounds, irrespective of community]. Also, the age effect [older people do better than the wet behind the ears and the USA has record longevity - 50 and 100 years ago it was much lower]. Also, the numbers effect. With 5 billion of us acting in co-operative, technological and specialized ways, we can do anything that physics allows. 100 years ago there were 1 billion digging dirt on farms. Also, the survival effect - people try to increase their prospect of living longer and happier. Plus the consumer surplus and profit effects I mentioned - things get better and better because people only do things if there's a surplus benefit and the output exceeds the input and they seek the biggest difference between output and input that they can find. It's easy to be an optimist. Then, there's the turbo-charging effect of genetic engineering, which will end many genetic diseases [cystic fibrosis and umpteen other horrors for people - nature is totally unintelligent and uses a winnowing process to run our DNA selection = all mutations are produced and then the dodgy ones are killed off or ignored [loneliness] as sexually inadequate [the girls say get lost loser]. So much better to do our own intelligent filtering without the suffering. Eugenics is a good thing. The Nazis just gave it a bad name. [I'm sure Faultline will realize that that's a good use of the banned word]. Then, to really get things jumping, we'll not only filter out the dross, but add in some stuff like melanin for those who wish to avoid skin cancer, brains for those who want to be like Einstein in ability to figure stuff out and hook up Google so we can remember everything and know everything [aerials under our skin and chips in our bones for mobile access to cyberspace with inductively coupled power supply]. The USA has got the companies which are in the vanguard of developing these things. So let's get the war over, revamp the UN and get on with it. Enough of the medieval atavistic Matrix of Malevolence. It's time for Saddam to get a real job. Mqurice
