I think it's odd that others haven't come to this same understanding. But in my opinion the idea of 'compromise' is not valued by the ME culture like it is by the west. The ideal that takes its place is more of a 'rule or submit' thing. After all the word 'Islam' which is often only partially correctly translated as 'peace' also means 'submission'. So while the west links peace with -compromise through negotiation- that is not the natural mind set in the near east where the idea of peace come from either -submission or rule-. In this light Saddam Hussein's 'negotiations' with the UN make a lot of sense. And I think it also might explain why Arafat rejected a plan (well... plans) that would have benefited the Palestinians greatly and even given them the ability to do great damage to the Isrealis. He couldn't compromise. As painful as it is for the World... some in the west are beginning to realize that if we can't get them to play by our rules we have to beat them at theirs. cAPS
