It's good to keep quotes accurate, or they become like Chinese whispers and change over time to such an extent that the original meaning becomes completely lost and maybe even changed to the opposite of what was meant.

Shot himself in the foot is an example of changed meaning. Now it means a mistake, whereas it was originally [if I've got this right] a deliberate act to shoot oneself in the foot so that they didn't have to stay in battle but could withdraw, injured.
