I think Amazon was worried about support from the financial community when the bust started, and they tried to "make things right" as best they could, which included the most severe treatment for every questionable expense. They did a lot of agressive things in the 90s and at the beginning of the downturn it looked like they may not make it. As far as their profitability, I suspect they'll surprise people long term, cash flow is all that matters in that business- its another Dell-type situation.
