Clinton's first victory was due to four major reasons:

1) The public had lost faith in Bush as an elitist with a bad economy, plus half Reagan's team had been indicted by then so there was a stink on him

2) Ross Perot split some of the vote, though he pulled out reportedly when the GOP threatened to out his lesbian daughter on her wedding day

3) Clinton could talk to folks like a Methodist preacher and was really sharp, charming and handsome. Women really liked him.

4) After 12 years of Reagan-Bush people wanted a change.

And Clinton delivered. Not bad for a nice poor kid (and horndog) from Hope
